ORIENTAL RUG ZINE

THREE CONTESTS

When Ron O’Callahan’s Oriental Rug Review(the spiritual ancestor of Oriental Rug Zine) made its debut more that a decade ago, Ron  asked readers to participate in a contest. He invited us to submit short essays addressing a question he posed, and he offered the “winner” a free life-time subscription to that wonderful magazine.

As one trying to bring forth a new magazine, I now recognize that Ron must have been trying to get people involved and perhaps to discover writers who might  contribute to it. It was a good idea, and in the same spirit we now announce a contest in which we invite you to take part.

Our journal, Oriental Rug Zine, is free, so instead of a subscription, we offer cash to the writer who best writes about "The Most Unforgetable Rug I Ever Met." Or"The Most Unforgettable  Rug-Person I Ever Met."

Contestants may choose either topic. Submissions should be not much longer than,  say, 750 words.  Please include photos of the rug or person if possible. Five finalists will be chosen by the editor, and each of their essays will be printed in these ethereal pages. The winner will be chosen by readers, who will cast their votes on Oriental Rug Zine’s bulletin board, and the winner will be awarded $150. The deadline is June 15, 2000, but we will be grateful to those who respond sooner.

There is a second contest as well. Though we enjoy our present logo “Live Rugs”  -  the oriental - rug bedecked sheep you find in our masthead, we don’t feel right about asking Jack Simantob, its creator, for permanent use of it. Please submit a  logo, a mark, a photo, a drawing - something that will look wonderful and be appropriate for this online magazine. Send it electronically in a useable form (we  work with PCs and compose on Word). And please realize that you are passing on to us the copyrights on whatever you submit. The winner will be awarded $150 and will be determined as above. The deadline is June 15, 2000. Ed.

The March issue begins a new contest,“Name That Sofa”.Participants must, identify not only the owner of the sofa, but also the rugs and textiles in the picture.   Prof. B. Jharr, the noted carpet authority and world traveler, has agreed to judge the contest. The deadline is July 1, 2000. Ed.
