In Volume I, Number 2
of the Oriental Rug Company Newsletter, Murray Eiland wrote about 21 Turkmen bag faces that we found in the London Free Port:
“These rugs are called 'Penjereliks' in the trade. Tribal origins are not clear, except for one Chaudor piece. The others are
finely woven, with very short pile, a long fringe along one side, and evidence that they have been used as bag faces, although in every case the backs have been removed. A number of them have Salor guls, and there
are Saryk and Tekke features on others. Nevertheless, they seem related and may actually come from the same place. Merv is the more likely origin. Rugs like this seldom appear on the American market…”
Since that time, I have not again heard the word penjerelik. (Nor have I bought 21 "uncirculated" antique Turkmen bag faces in one place!)
